Explain the Responsibility of the Human Resources Department :: Business and Management Studies

Explain the Responsibility of the Human Resources Department Within any business the Human Resources department is a vital functional area. The department’s main role is to ensure the welfare of employees and make sure any problems are resolved quickly and efficiently whether internal or external. Although this is the main function of the department there are also a number of other roles the Human Resource department handles within a business: Ø Development and monitoring employee appraisal system Ø Overseeing industrial relations Ø Dealing with disciplinary Ø Paying Salaries Ø Redundancy Ø Training and development Ø Recruitment and selection All the above are typical functions carried out by the human resources department, as they are clearly linked to employees and problems they may have. Although the above are typical functions carried out by the human resources department there are sometimes other functions that are specific to certain businesses that have to be dealt with when they arise. HSBC I will be studying a part of HSBC that was formally known as Merrill Lynch. Merrill Lynch was set up in 2001 and aimed to revolutionise the way in which investors banked. In July 2002 HSBC took over 100% of the ownership of Merrill Lynch and it was now part of the HSBC group. The telephone call centre that was opened near Leamington Spa’s ‘Spa Park’ created hundreds of jobs for people in the surrounding areas. Throughout this project I will be studying the functions of the human resources department at HSBC in Leamington Spa. HSBC have many internal departments, which mean that communication within the company is vital. Each of these departments depend heavily upon one anther in the day-to-day running of the business. When recruiting HSBC must ensure that they have a clear strategy that they follow throughout the recruitment and selection process. As they employ a large number of people it is important that they select the right people first time due to the costs associated with recruitment and selection. When HSBC needs to recruit a large number of people they use agencies to help reduce the administration work for the human resources department and generally get the job done more efficiently. Unemployment within Leamington Spa is at record lows, and for that reason HSBC need to make sure they offer appealing positions with attractive salaries to recruit successfully. This can be done through newspaper advertisements and HSBC need to ensure that in these advertisements they portray the company image in a positive light. As the human resources department covers a large amount of tasks and functions I have decided to cover the main activities that are most important to the organisation. Ø The Working Environment

Daily Dairy

First day back at placement after Easter Holiday, I greeted children in to class as their parents dropped them in to class in the morning. Straight away children where learning through play. My morning duty was to supervise children and play with them. There was Lego, foam on a table, a table with sand and toys set out for the children. Girl A speaks Bengali at the moment learning to speak English. But she said whistle in Bengali as she was pouring sand through a windmill toy. Girl B described the foam as â€Å"sticky† as she was touching the foam. Girl A said â€Å"let’s play with water! †, again she said that in Bengali.So I helped her and translated in Bengali for her to repeat after me and say, â€Å"Let’s†¦ play†¦ with†¦ water! † She attempted and said, â€Å"play†¦ with†¦ water! † I then praised her and said, â€Å"Well done! † While Girl A, B, C & D where playing with fishes in the water bath they were s eeing who catches how many fishes. So I instructed them to take turns and count how many they caught in their nets. After play I assisted Girl B to wash her hands making sure the water was not to hot and that she rinsed all the foam off her hands. Then I instructed her to dry her hands with the towel.At morning play, I was with a group of children. I pointed out to them as we were admiring the sun that the clouds where moving. So I instructed them to steady their eyes on the clouds and watch how slowly the clouds move. After break was numeracy time. The children where divided in three groups in different areas f the class room. One of the teachers had to go to the loo so she left me with her group and instructed me to sing â€Å"five little ducks† with them which they enjoyed as I exaggerated my hand gestures. After the teacher came back she did a sharing and counting activity using bears/animals & a container.Boy A understands more about equableness than the other children i n his group. After group activity children had phonics time with the whole class just before lunch. They where sounding out the first letter of their names. E. g. â€Å"T†¦ T†¦ Tahmina† and then deciding whether it was a bouncy or stretchy sound. â€Å"T†¦ T†¦ is a bouncy sound† During phonics another teacher called me over and instructed me to set the construction play table outside ready for lunch play. So I chose a box full of Interstars and tipped the lot on the table outside in the nursery playground.Then Miss put out costumes in a corner for the children to express themselves as different characters. I believe this is a great way to build their confidence. Before lunch I supervised children to wash there hands and dry them. Also I was mopping the floor regularly for the children’s safety in case they slipped because water was being sprinkled on the floor. At the lunch hall, I asked the children what they would like to eat giving them a choice of, tuna rap or chicken. Then I gave the children a slice of bread and some salad, bearing in mind there was a child allergic to bread on my table.As well as working 1:1 with Girl A helping her eat cause she was getting bored I also helped other children cut their chicken into small pieces making it easy for them to eat and pick up. During lunch play I was instructed by the teacher to water the plants with the children which I very much enjoyed with the children as they enjoyed the activity to. I didn’t experience any difficulties during that particular activity, but if there were any concerns or problems I would have asked any of the teachers for advice and support.

All people have a particular idea of themselves. The idea of who they are and who they are not. The way people lead an everyday life within an environment and interactions with other human beings make them feel closer connected to some groups of people and different from others. How feeling similarity and difference in society affects ability to attain a positive sense of self and meaning are an important questions within psychology. Theory of social identity constructed by Tajfel and psychosocial theory of identity created by Erik Erikson are two of theories which give answer to this question. Tajfel and Erikson(ref) defined identity as two dimensional, containing personal and social part. Tajfel explained that only knowing u are part of group without intention to be in group or gaining something is enough for people to feel diversity which leads to discriminating of outgroup and prioritizing ingroup in order to highlight group’s status. Tajfel showed how membership of group can make us see differences and get to know who we are and where we belong to by commiting to rules of group. The final stage is comparing own group with other ones. If there is chance of changing identity people tend to move from lower valuated to higher valuated group for example work position. If there is no chance of changing identity due it was given to us –race gender etc and people feel their group is devaluated they can take an action. People try to creatively highlight positive characteristics of ingroup comparing to other groups. .
